Maskne: How to Treat and Prevent Face Mask Breakouts

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

If one thing is for certain during this time of uncertainty, it’s the struggle with maskne.

As you know, wearing a face mask has become a wardrobe essential due to COVID-19. While wearing face masks plays a crucial role in reducing the spread of the virus, there remains a common side-effect, maskne.

So what exactly is maskne?

As the name suggests, maskne (technically known as acne mechanica) is a type of acne that is caused by heat, repetitive friction, and rubbing against the skin.

Wearing face masks for extended periods without letting the skin breathe can causes bacteria, sweat, and dirt to become trapped in the skin and clog pores. Essentially, face masks have become a breeding ground for blackheads, pimples, and small reddened cysts to manifest in areas such as the chin, lip contour, and nose, GROSS!

How to treat and prevent maskne?

Many of our clients are experiencing maskne and are struggling to find solutions to prevent and treat their breakouts. Luckily, we have four quick tips to help you combat maskne during these trying times.

1. Regularly wash your masks with a fragrance-free detergent and routinely change face masks. If possible, we recommend opting for cotton, silk, or satin-based masks as these fabrics are more breathable than surgical masks.

2. Gently cleanse the skin and use a light-weight moisturizer daily. Avoid over-washing your skin and applying too much product, especially if using products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid as it can strip away the skin's natural protective barrier.

3. Avoid applying makeup in areas where the mask touches your face as makeup can easily get trapped, clog your pores, and cause your skin to breakout.

4. Book a specific facial designed to treat acne breakouts with a trusted and experienced esthetician.
